Roddick into fourth round

Lots of action going on at Wimbledon this week, and so far there haven't been any major upsets among the top seeds. I watched Andy Roddick's third round match yesterday against Philipp Kohlschreiber. It was a good match, and although I didn't think Roddick played his best tennis, he was able to elevate his game in the final two sets to come away with the victory. Next up for him is Yen-hsun Lu. Also lurking in the quarter of the draw are Lleyton Hewitt and Novak Djokovic, who will face each other next round. That should be a good match. Hewitt has proven that he's a force on grass, and Djokovic hasn't been quite as good on this surface as he has on clay and hard courts. In the other half of the draw are Nadal, Murray, and Soderling, all three of whom have been cruising so far. Soderling and Nadal would meet in the quarterfinals if they both continue winning. That would be quite an interesting rematch of their French Open final.

Nadal takes fifth French Open crown

Earlier today I watched the men's final of the French Open between Robin Soderling and Rafa Nadal. An interesting matchup since Soderling had ousted Federer in the quarters and defeated Nadal at this tournament last year. The match was not a complete blowout, although the score made it seem a bit more lopsided than it really was. The first set was close. Nadal had one break, and Soderling had some opportunities to break but couldn't do it. The Swede seemed to lose some steam in the second set and was broken twice, and after that the third set was predictable. I give Soderling a lot of credit, though, for making it to the final for the second year in a row. Last year he seemed to be a one-hit wonder who was lucky to beat Nadal, but now he's proven that he is very dangerous on clay, especially at Roland Garros. Also of note: Nadal will now replace Federer as the top-ranked player in the world. It looks like he'll be at the top for a while, since he missed Wimbledon last year and will likely perform well there in a few weeks.
